The Owner - Ms. Deborah Gary:
With a diverse background in education and experiences, Ms Gary has formed a business that captures all of them.
She grew up surrounded by books which influenced her and her siblings, evolving to an extended family of educators with many different approaches.
A dedicated professional. Retired with 28 years of federal government service in information technology management: 14 years active as an Air Force officer, Major; 14 years as a federal civilian senior engineering manager for the Defense Information Systems Agency. Her teams designed, integrated, deployed and sustained information technology and information assurance solutions that are currently still implemented worldwide; she directly communicated with senior managers across the Department of Defense, industry and throughout the Federal Government.
Her desire to educate has been a strong basis for all of her endeavors. She established an internal “schoolhouse” with in-house courses and formal training for over 160 engineers for the Department of Defense thus winning the National Outstanding Women of Color in Engineering for Government Education in 1998. As one of the top managers in her department, she led her team to win the Outstanding Technical Project of the Year in 2005 and was previously nominated in 2003.
She has years of experience in non-profit management, public relations services, event planning, personnel training and development, retail management, as an entrepreneur, as well as mentoring and algebra tutoring.
As the owner of the Color Book Gallery, which started in 1992, with it's initial store opening in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1994, she devotes this pursuit to encouraging our children to read by providing quality multicultural, bilingual and educational books. The initial store remained open for 5 years. The store reopened in Historic Occoquan, Virginia from 2006 to Spring 2008 and has now relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Helping others is her God given talent and purpose. Literacy and knowledge is vital.
